A Journey That Changed Everything

Jessica's Birthright Israel experience in July 2025 was transformative. What began as a 10-day trip to Israel evolved into something far more profound, an awakening to her identity as a Jewish woman and her connection to the Jewish people worldwide.

The connections she made during Birthright opened unexpected doors. Today, Jessica is thriving as a Birthright Israel Onward Intern in Tel Aviv, deepening her engagement with the organization and the country that changed her life. Her story is a testament to the power of community, belonging, and the courage to step into your identity.

Jessica's Story

In Her Own Words

What was the single moment or realization on Birthright Israel that stayed with you the most?

One moment that stayed with me most happened during Shabbat on our trip. As we walked through the hotel to start a group activity, other Birthright groups were there as well. Suddenly, Israeli music started playing and everyone began dancing and singing together. It was such a powerful moment, complete strangers united in joy and pride, connected simply by being Jewish. I will never forget that feeling of belonging.

What opportunities opened up for you as a direct result of your Birthright experience?

Because of my Birthright experience this last summer, I applied to the internship program I am currently participating in, a two-month experience in Tel Aviv. It also opened doors for me to stay involved with Birthright itself. The trip did not just inspire me emotionally, it created real opportunities that have shaped my next steps.

How did it (re)shape your sense of identity or belonging within the Jewish community?

The shift in my identity and sense of belonging is truly profound. I feel a deeper pride and confidence in being Jewish. The friendships I built on my trip showed me how to embrace and express that pride openly. Being in Israel carries an indescribable energy, you cannot help but feel connected to something bigger than yourself and to the global Jewish community.

What do you think your life might look like if you hadn't gone on Birthright?

If I had not gone on Birthright, I think I would still feel uncertain about where I stand in my Jewish identity. Especially after October 7th, there has been a shift for Jews around the world. Understanding that this is our people and our home, and feeling empowered to stand up for that, is something I once struggled with. Birthright helped solidify that sense of clarity and confidence within me.

Why do you believe experiences like Birthright are especially important for Jewish young adults today?

Birthright is something you cannot fully understand until you experience it. In one trip, you feel heartbreak, resilience, strength, and joy of the Jewish people. It gives you a renewed sense of purpose and pride that stays with you long after you leave. Especially in today's climate, there has never been a more important time for young Jews to feel connected to their identity and community.

One or two words to describe Birthright Israel? Why?

Life changing. Empowering. Birthright strengthened my connection to Judaism in a way I did not know was possible. The pride, comfort, and sense of belonging I gained are something I will carry with me forever.
